    Local colleges: Ex-Fitch great Hill helps UConn stay alive in AAC baseball tourney

    Clearwater, Fla. — Aaron Hill of Groton scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning as UConn remained alive in the American Athletic Conference baseball tournament with a 4-3 win over No. 7 Central Florida on Thursday.

    Hill, the former Fitch standout, reached base on a single and scored on Vinny Siena's base hit. No. 6 UConn (34-24) will play in a losers' bracket game against either East Carolina or Tulane on Friday at 3 p.m.

    Carson Cross started for the Huskies, allowing five hits over seven innings. Anthony Kay (8-6) picked up the win. Joe DeRoche-Duffin and Siena had two hits each for UConn.

    • Four Mitchell College baseball players were named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-New England teams. Junior Al Jordan Johnson of Groton was one of four pitchers and 15 players on the first team while senior outfielder Kenneth Olszewski made the second team and junior pitcher Tyler Shamas and senior catcher Ryan Goodwin earned spots on the third team. They led the Mariners to a 32-7 overall record and the program's second straight berth in the Division III NCAA tournament.

    • Waterford graduate Nolan Long was the hard-luck loser in Wagner College's 3-1 loss to Sacred Heart in a Northeast Conference first-round tournament game at Dodd Stadium in Norwich. Long, a sophomore right-hander, carried a 1-0 lead into the ninth inning. He left without recording an out and Sacred Heart scored three runs. He allowed eight hits and two runs while walking one and striking out two in eight plus innings. Second-seeded Wagner (27-22-1) plays top-seeded Bryant at noon on Friday today. Bryant lost to No. 4 Fairleigh Dickinson 7-2 

    Football

    • UConn and Syracuse have agreed to play a two-game non-conference series. The Huskies will serve as host on Sept. 24, 2016, at Rentschler Field and visit the Carrier Dome on Sept. 29, 2018. The two former Big East rivals met nine times from 2004-2012, with the Huskies winning six.

    UConn's 2016 non-conference schedule also includes home games against Maine and Virginia and a road game against UMass at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro. The school also announced that the Huskies will host Rhode Island in a non-conference home game in 2018.

    Men's basketball

    • Mamadou Diarra, a member of the Class of 2016, is holding a press conference on Friday at Woodstock Academy to announce his college plans. He's reportedly choosing between UConn and Virginia Commonwealth. Diarra, a 6-foot-8 forward, played for Putnam Science Academy last winter.

    Track and Field

    • Coast Guard Academy senior Beth Gollin's athletic career ended at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at St. Lawrence in Canton, N.Y. She posted the 19th best time (11:19.63) in the 3,000 steeplechase preliminaries, failing to qualify for Saturday's final. She came as the 12th seed. it was her third straight trip to the NCAA Championships.

    College honors

    • Ten Connecticut College student athletes have been selected as 2015 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars by the Diverse Issues in Higher Education magazine. Kaitlyn Cresencia, Ajami Gikandi, Alex Hernandez, Myra Jacobs, Aneeka Kalia, Greg Liautaud, Mike Martinez, Adam Patel, Daniel Sandoval and Natalie Wenigmann were honored. The award recognizes undergraduate students of color who have made academic and athletic achievement a winning combination.
