Coast Guard women lead group after Day 1 of sailing nationals

Coast Guard Academy's sailing team is in a great shape heading into the second day of the Sperry Women's National Championship regatta in Newport.

The Bears are first out of 14 teams in the Eastern semifinal division after one day of racing. They scored 49 points to take the lead on Monday. College of Charleston (50), Georgetown (51), Dartmouth (64) and Rhode Island (68) round out the top five.

Entering the competition, Coast Guard was ranked second in the country.

Conditions were nearly perfect for race day.

"'We sailed in almost identical conditions in Newport a few weeks ago, so we felt pretty comfortable," coach Brian Swingly said in a release. "We got off the (starting) line well and the speed did the rest. We felt pretty quick."

Yale, the top-ranked team, is first in the Western semifinal division with 32 points, followed by Stanford (67), Boston College (70), Old Dominion University (82) and Vermont (85).

After today's second semifinal regatta, the top nine teams in each division will advance to the finals, which runs Wednesday and Thursday.

Nikole Barnes, Jennifer Lane, Devon Rohde and Hanning Herring competed for Coast Guard on Monday.
