    Local roundup: East Lyme, Stonington advance to ECC boys' lacrosse final

    Waterford – Top-seeded East Lyme erupted for 10 second-half goals to pull away from No. 4 Bacon Academy 16-7 in the semifinals of the Eastern Connecticut Conference boys' lacrosse tournament Wednesday night at Waterford High School.

    The Vikings (12-5) will play No. 2 Stonington, a 14-6 winner over No. 3 Waterford in the first semifinal, in Friday's championship at 7 p.m.

    Aaron Dixon led the East Lyme offense with three goals and four assists while Zane Smallidge had three goals and one assist, Mason Pagan had two goals and two assists, Mark Wojcik had a goal and two assists, and Kyle MacDonnell, Erik Aarsand and Kyle Bernard each scored twice.

    In the other semifinal game:

    • Tyler Grills had four goals and two assists to power No. 2 Stonington past No. 3 Waterford, 14-6, in the ECC semifinals. Jack Hall had three goals and an assist while Matthew Briggs had two goals and Jack Riordan added three goals and two assists for the Bears (12-5). Billy Barrs had three goals while Michael Beltran, Kyle Cardoza and Tony Vocalino each had one for the Lancers (11-6).

    H.S. track and field

    • Old Lyme's Will DeMott was second in the boys' 400 meters in 52.79 seconds and teammate Jared Stanland second in the discus with a throw of 157 feet, 7 inches at the Shoreline Conference championship meet at Coginchaug. Old Lyme was seventh in the team standings with 44 points.

    Also for Old Lyme, Brian Buttrick was fourth in the high jump (5-8) and sixth in the long jump (19-3.75), Daniel Cole fifth in the 3,200 (10:25.58) and James Kolb sixth in the 1,600 (4:46.14).

    Samantha Lee was third in the girls' 200 (27.69) and 400 (1:01.63).Old Lyme was 11th with 12 points.

    H.S. boys' golf

    • Brett Sadinsky was the medalist with a 39 as Cromwell edged Old Lyme 171-172 in a Shoreline Conference match at Black Hall Club. Matt McCarthy shot a 40 for the Wildcats while Graham Aird and Will Roberts each carded 42s.

    H.S. girls' golf

    • Unbeaten Hand (15-0) defeated NFA 181-241 at Clinton Country Club. The Wildcats (2-7) were led by Hannah Slocum a shot a 50.

    College sailing

    • Coast Guard Academy resides in ninth place after the first day of finals competition in the Sperry Women’s Sailing National Championship in Newport. The Bears scored 164 points on Wednesday, lagging far behind the top three of Boston College (114), Brown University (115) and Yale (116), the top ranked team.

    Eighteen teams are competing for the national championship. Competition ends today with the final regatta. Dartmouth (127), College of Charleston (131), Georgetown (139), Rhode Island (141) and Stanford (149) occupy the fourth through eight spots.

    College rowing

    • Colin Regan has resigned as head coach of the Coast Guard Academy men's rowing team. Regan led the Bears for two seasons. Athletic director Tim Fitzpatrick said a national search for Regan's replacement will begin immediately.

    College honors

    • Connecticut College's Kim Bolick was named to the Division III Academic All-District II first team in cross country/track and field for the second straight year. Bolick hold school records in the mile and 1,000-meters, as well as being member of record-setting 4x800 and distance medley relay teams.

    • Eastern Connecticut State University freshmen Savonnah Artis (Waterford) and Taylor Driggers (NFA) have been honored by the Little East Conference in women's outdoor track and field, sharing the league's Rookie Field Athlete of the Year award. Artis set a school record in the triple jump (37 feet, 5.75 inches) while Driggs broke a 32-yard-old program record in the long jump (18-1).
