    Stonington nips Avon 4-3 in Class M girls' tennis quarters

    Groton - Second-seeded Stonington High School swept all three doubles matches to beat No. 26 Avon 4-3 in a CIAC Class M girls' tennis tournament quarterfinal at Mystic Indoor Sports on Tuesday.

    The Bears (16-0) will host Thursday's semifinal against a yet to be determined opponent.

    "I knew it would be tough," coach George Crouse said. "I thought we'd do a little better in singles, though. ... We hung in there. It was a nail-biter day, believe me. I'm very proud of the girls."

    The Bears dropped the first three singles matches. Unbeaten Charlotte Johnstone ended the drought by winning at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-3.

    The No. 1 doubles duo of Mallory McArdle and Claire Morehouse posted a 6-0, 6-2 win while Gina Feliciano and Morgan Parrilla won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 and Jen Carroll and Mckenzie Salder won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3.

    Boys’ tennis

    • Old Lyme is in contention for Class S team title heading into the Wednesday’s quarterfinal and semifinal round at Conard High School in West Hartford. 

    The Wildcats had a very successful third round on Tuesday, with Brendan White and three doubles teams winning their respective matches at Yale University in New Haven. They are tied with East Catholic with 13 points.

    “You know when you’re this far in the states everybody you’re facing belongs here,” Old Lyme coach John Pfeiffer said.

    White, the No. 7 seed, beat No. 10 Ben Bosco of East Catholic, 6-4, 6-4. He faces No. 2 Alex Zuczek of St. Bernard in Wednesday's quarterfinals. Zuczek, the Eastern Connecticut Conference singles champion, defeated Old Saybrook’s Daniel Capuano, 6-2, 6-1.

    St. Bernard’s Nick Zuczek, the No. 5 seed, also advanced, defeating East Catholic’s Kirantheja Daggula, 6-0, 7-6 (7-3). He plays No. 4 Jonathan Miller of Housatonic in the quarterfinals.

    In doubles action, No. 3 Ethan Fenton and Austin Pilgrim of Old Lyme knocked off No. 14 Jonas Real and Jonathan Smith, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5). They play No. 11 Christian Royer and Winter Thorne-Kaunelis of NW Regional in the quarterfinals.

    Old Lyme's Charles Dahlke and Jason Feng, the No. 12 seed, fought past Garrett D’Amato and Brian Juberlirer of Coginchaug, 6-2, 5-7 (4-7), 10-8. They meet No. 13 Kyle Brooks and Patrick Lazor of NW Catholic.

    Unseeded Alex Clippinger and Adam Czarnecki of Old Lyme upset No. 9 Alan Esposito and Trevor Coco, 6-2, 4-6, 10-2. They take on top-seeded Mike Dorman and Eric Weinstein of East Catholic.

    • East Lyme’s Suryansh Patel, the No. 9 seed, advanced to the Class M singles quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-3 win over No. 8 Holden Robinson of Lewis Mills in third-round action at Yale. He plays top-seeded Andrew Schadt of Tolland on Wednesday for the right to move on to the semifinals.

    Stonington’s Avery Oefinger dropped his third-round singles match to No. 4 Eric Selzer of Avon, 6-0, 6-2.

    In third-round doubles action, East Lyme’s Nipan Hewage and Eric Wu beat No. 12 Avish Patel and Chris Tsang of Stonington, 6-2, 7-5. The ECC champions play No. 4 Ishan Mirchandani and Matthew Sydney of Weston in the quarterfinals.

    The East Lyme duo of Sujay Alavala and Mukesh Kurumbail lost to No. 8 Derek Mango and Michael McCourt of Bethel, 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-5), 10-5, and Ledyard’s Ben McHale and Jake Skilbred fell to No. 2 Pranav Madan and Greg Portner of Weston, 6-1, 6-2.

    High School golf

    • Brendan Sullivan earned medalist honors with a 1-over 36 in Norwich Free Academy's non-conference match against East Catholic (17-0) at Tallwood Country Club in Hebron. Undefeated East Catholic won 153-168 with all five golfers shooting below 40. Noah Straub had a 41 for the Wildcats (11-7).

    College sailing

    • Coast Guard Academy finished fifth in the Coed Eastern semifinals to qualify for the national championship finals. The Bears scored 198 points in the second of two semifinal regattas, finishing behind Tufts (183), Boston College (161), Georgetown (150) and College of Charleston (140).

    The top nine finishers from the Eastern and Western semifinals advanced to the final round. Yale placed first in the Western regatta with 118 points. The two-day final begins today in Newport.
