    Local roundup: Tigers beat ValleyCats for second straight win

    Norwich — Chase Edwards scattered three hits over 6.2 strong innings as the Connecticut Tigers won their second straight game with a 7-1 victory over the Tri-City ValleyCats in a New York-Penn League game at Dodd Stadium on Monday night.

    Edwards walked one and struck out five for the Tigers (4-6), who took control with a three-run second against Tri-City (5-6), all with two outs. Victor Padron's RBI single made it 1-0 and Pat Mackenzie followed with a two-run single to make it 3-0.

    Corey Baptist added a two-run triple in a three-run seventh that broke the game open for the Tigers while reliever Gerson Moreno retired all seven batters he face to earn his first save.

    • Former St. Bernard star Willie Rios scattered three hits over six innings as the Mystic Schooners won their second straight game with an 8-1 victory over the Danbury Westerners in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Rios (2-0) walked five and struck out eight for the Schooners (12-6) while leadoff hitter Nick Mascelli (Wagner) went 3-for-5, Richard Slenker (Yale) had two hits and two RBI, including his first home run, and Casey Baker (Stony Brook) had two hits, including an RBI double.

    Zone VI Senior Legion

    • Justin's Marceau's two-out single in the bottom of the seventh scored Jeremy Santos and gave New London a 2-1 win over Jewett City. New London (12-5) tied the game an inning earlier when Marceau scored on a base hit by Hendrik Khoury. Pieter Khoury got the win for New London by pitching a three-hitter with one walk and seven strikeouts.

    Zone VI Junior Legion

    • Niantic swept Norwich, winning the opener 4-2 and the second game 4-1. Ryan Kane had a two-run double in the opener to back winning pitcher Justin Oleary while Zack Van Dale pitched a complete game in the second game, Oleary had a two-run double and Jack Mountatin and Lucas Sousa-Ross each had two hits.

    District 6 Babe Ruth (15)

    • Waterford defeated Tri-County 13-0 in five innings as Colin Bakken pitched a two-hit shutout and also had two hits and three RBI. Brandon McMahon had a double for Tri-County.

    • Groton used a four-run second inning to turn back Montville. Jordan Lowell went the distance for Groton, scattering six hits and striking out eight. He also was 3-for-4 with a double while Phil Warner was 1-for-2 with a run scored and RBI and Ricky Ramos had an RBI hit. Bryan Guetens had a home run and two RBI for Montville.

    District 6 Babe Ruth (14)

    • East Lyme defeated New London 12-1 in five innings to advance to the championship round on Wednesday against host Waterford. Todd Robbins had three hits, including a double, while Joe Ennis added a single and double and Jacob Diaz, Tom Mason and Jake Schelkly each added two hits, Joe Ennis had a single and double for New London while Jathean Nazario and Kyle Clement added two hits apiece.

    District 6 Babe Ruth (13)

    • Ledyard advanced to the championship round with a 3-1 win over Waterford, scoring three runs in the seventh to rally for the win behind key hits by Matt Thornton and Brenden Thornton. Andreas Pardo also doubled for Ledyard while Steve Cantres, Sonny Pezzello and Zane Mikula each had two hits for Waterford.

    • East Lyme defeated Tri-County 9-1 in the losers' bracket behind Christopher Malcom, who went 4-for-4 with two doubles. Galen Donovan added a two-run double and Ethan Toback had two hits for East Lyme, while Sean Casey had a single and double for Tri-County.

    District 10 softball (11-12)

    • Mystic/Groton advanced to the semifinals with an 11-0 win over Lyme/Old Lyme in four innings. Aspen Ryan and Ellie Hohlfelder combined to strike out 11 batters for Mystic/Groton while Karly Morales, Nora Ryan and Abby Rogers each had two hits.
