    Local college roundup: CGA men beat Clark 73-64

    New London — Ethan Boose recorded his third double-double of the season, scoring 25 points and adding a career-high 12 rebounds, as Coast Guard Academy rode a hot start to a 73-64 victory over Clark in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference men's basketball game Saturday.

    The Bears (8-6, 2-2) scored the game's first 19 points in beating Clark (5-10, 2-2) for the fifth time in the last six meetings at home.

    Boose, a sophomore, finished 10-for-15 from the floor and was joined in double figures by Kevin Alvarez (17) and Ricky Rodriguez (10).

    In other games:

    • Alan Morgan had 19 points and nine assists as Mitchell College beat Lesley, 86-69, in the New England Collegiate Conference. Parris Hill made 9 of 11 field goals and scored 19 points with six rebounds for Mitchell (3-8, 2-3) and Donavan McClean had 17 points and seven rebounds. Lesley is 2-13, 1-5.

    • Jayde Dawson scored 26 points as Amherst edged Connecticut College, 88-86, in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Daniel Janel had 18 points and 14 rebounds for the Camels (10-5, 2-2) and Lee Messier scored 17. Amherst is 13-1, 3-0.

    • Northern Essex defeated UConn-Avery Point 80-77 in Groton. Aaron Lorenzo scored 16 points for the Pointers while Ibo Rivera, Will Orr and Mack Osias added 13 apiece.

    Women's basketball

    • WPI used a 10-0 second-half run to wipe out a two-point deficit in the third quarter before pulling away for a 58-45 win over Coast Guard in the NEWMAC. Ama Biney led WPI (15-1, 7-0) with 14 points while Meghan Fornaro scored a game-high 25 points and added a career-high 13 rebounds for the Bears (8-6, 5-2).

    • Diamond Thomas scored 15 points and 12 Mariners scored at least two points in a 68-26 NECC win over Lesley. Thomas added eight rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks, and teammate Samantha Ryan grabbed nine rebounds for Mitchell (4-8, 3-3).

    Women's hockey

    • Ashley Anctil scored a pair of goals to lead Conn College to a 3-0 win over Wesleyan in the NESCAC, the Camels' sixth straight win. Goalie Katherine Chester made 25 saves for the Camels (7-5-1, 4-3-1), her fourth consecutive shutout. Jordan Cross also scored for Conn while Lily Connolly had a pair of assists.

    Men's indoor track

    • Coast Guard won nine of 18 events to easily win their season-opening CGA Winter Invitational. The Bears had 233 points while Conn College placed fourth with 46. The Bears picked up individual wins from Richard Lee in the 55-meter dash (6.63), Raeford Penny in the 400 (52.01), Andrew Ireland in the 600 (1:27.82), Brett Foster in the 800 (2:00.79), James Rimmele in the mile (4:40.33), Andrew Brown in the 3,000 (9:07.20) and Matt Navetta in the pole vault (14 feet, 5.25 inches). CGA also won two relays — the 4x200 team of Penny, Tyler Templeton, Luke Rehfuss and Nicholas Frystak in 1:34.26, and the 4x400 team of Chip Crowley, Ireland, Frystak and Penny in 3:31.64.

    Women's indoor track

    • Coast Guard's Monet Masters set a facility record in the pole vault (11-1.75) in leading the Bears to a second-place finish in the season-opening CGA Winter Invitational. Conn College won the meet with 172 points and the Bears finished with 148. Also for CGA, Sarah Cummings won the 400 (1:04.57), Bonny Turnage the mile (5:29.75), Jennifer Hayley in 1,000 meters (3:18.33), Caroline Jenkins the 55 hurdles (9.60) and Gabrielle Troise the weight throw (47-1.75). CGA's 4x800 relay team of Madison Ahlers, Alexandra Cobb, Jenkins and Cummings also won in 10:51.22.

    Men's swimming

    • Freshman Dan Moreno won three events, but Coast Guard lost to Merchant Marine 158-142. Moreno won the 200 freestyle (1:45.61), 200 breaststroke (2:09.22) and 200 IM (1:56.53) to lead the Bears (5-2), while Mike Franco won the 500 free (4:54.78) and the 1,000 free (10:14.22), and CGA's 200 freestyle relay team of Brandon Ledford, Ben Morseth, Patrick Jackson and Elliot VanDeren won in 1:28.12.

    • Conn College split a tri-match with Wesleyan and host Williams. The Camels beat the Cardinals, 208-82, but lost to the Ephs, 182.5-78.5. A.J. Pite won the 1,650-yard freestyle in 16:32.61 for Conn, and George Tilneac captured the 200 free in 1:44.15.

    Women's swimming

    • Freshman Kristen Young won three individual events as Coast Guard defeated Merchant Marine 193-106. Young won the 100 freestyle (54.77), 200 free (1:58.03) and the 100 butterfly (1:00.19) for the Bears (3-6), and joined Samantha Kenis, Addy Rutkoske and Patti Eidenire on the winning 200 medley relay team (1:53.45). Also for the Bears, Christine McCulla won the 500 free (5:30.17) and  1,000 freee (11:13.82), Rutkoske won the 100 breaststroke (1:09.76) and 200 breast (2:32.63), Cece Marzinsky won the 200 fly (2:19.18), Eidenire won the 50 free (25.73), Kenis won the 200 IM (2:17.91) and the 200 free relay team of Eideinire, McCulla, Rutkoske and Victoria Talens won in 1:42.49.

    • Conn College split a NESCAC tri-meet, defeating Wesleyan 206-82 but losing to Williams 198-80. Valerie Urban won the 1,650 freestyle (17:39.98) for the Camels and Shannon Cry capture the 50 free (24.38).

    Wrestling

    • Sophomore Chris Sullivan went 3-0 as Coast Guard won two of three matches in a quad-meet at Western New England. The Bears (3-5) lost to No. 11 Johnson & Wales 27-19 before defeating WNE 43-9 and Norwich 33-6. Sullivan had two pins in three matches for the Bears.
