    Local roundup: Hidalgo clinches wrestling victory for Whalers in final match

    Waterford — George Hidalgo recorded a first-period pin in the final match at 195 pounds to give the New London High School wrestling team a 36-33 victory over Waterford on Wednesday.

    The matchup started at 220 pounds. New London also got pins from Alejandro Paulino (132), Luis Rodriguez-Veras (170), Renelson Michel (220) and Auggie Cornish (285) and decisions from Efrain Santiago (138) and Jacob Commander (160). The Whalers are 6-3.

    Logan Smith (106), Tyler Radack (113), Josh Rouisse (120) and Sam Lindblom (152) had pins for Waterford (14-11) and Andy Lowney (126), Noah Concascia (145) and Justin Keating (182) won by decision.

    In other matches:

    • No. 9 Ledyard remained unbeaten in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division with a 66-9 win over Woodstock Academy. Austin Robertson (113), Bryton Kelly (120), Shane Fors (138), Michael Sullivan (170), Dakota Grover (182), Daric Johnson (220) and Shawn Hundley (285) had pins for Ledyard (18-2, 5-0).

    • Morgan recorded five pins and won two other matches by forfeit, beating Fitch 45-35. Jarod Kosman (106), Anthony Moore (120) and Trent Evans had pins for Fitch (9-17) and teammate Wisdom Bedjrah (152) also won his match.

    Men's basketball

    • Ian Converse scored a career-high 21 points to lead No. 13 WPI to a 78-58 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference game. Converse, the former Woodstock Academy standout, had 14 of his points in the first half as WPI (16-2, 6-1) raced to a 37-20 lead. Ethan Boose had 15 points and eight rebounds and Adrian Chuquillangui scored 12 for Coast Guard (8-9, 2-5).

    • Christian Vital scored 12 points and had eight assists as St. Thomas More beat Worcester Academy 80-57. Zach Radz scored 10 points and Kai Mitchell had six rebounds for T-More (18-1).

    Women's basketball

    • Meghan Fornaro scored 21 points and had seven assists as Coast Guard beat Smith 75-65 in a NEWMAC game. Gill Gerton had 18 of her 20 points in the second half for Coast Guard (9-8, 6-3), which snapped a three-game losing streak. Torie Sutherland had 16 points and 12 rebounds for Coast Guard.  

    H.S. boys' basketball

    • Landon Peabody scored 21 points as Waterford beat Old Lyme 77-54. Jeff Evans had 12 points and 10 rebounds, Mike Buscetto had 11 points, 10 assists and five steals and Walker Sutman had 10 rebounds for Waterford (9-3). Dean Palenski had 15 points and Drake Gavin scored 13 for Old Lyme (8-4).

    • Williams School lost to Oxford Academy 48-31. Harrison Hall led Williams (3-8) with 10 points.

    • Cheney Tech beat Norwich Tech 65-48 in a Constitution State Conference game. Alex Casillas had 15 points and Jared Neal scored 13 for Norwich Tech. 

    H.S. girls' basketball

    • Norwich Tech lost to Cheney Tech in a CSC game 34-33. Madison Bodley led Norwich Tech with 21 points.

    H.S. boys' swimming

    • Williams School set three school records in a meet against Hamden Hall (54 points) and Wilbraham & Munson Academy (53). The Blues scored 41 points. Jordan Legg won the 100 butterfly in a record 56.72 seconds and also took first in the 200 freestyle (1:55.54). The 200 medley relay team of Clegg, Will Jarrett, Cyrus D'Arcy and Alex Doerwaldt placed second in a record 1:52.72. The 200 freestyle relay team of Jarrett, D'Arcy, Legg and Andrew Little won in a record 1:39.51. Jarrett also was first in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke.

    H.S. girls' swimming

    • Elizabeth Li won the 100 breaststroke and placed third in the 200 IM for Williams School, which posted 38 points while losing to Hamden Hall (63) and Wilbraham & Munson (53). The 200 freestyle relay team of Li, Alessandra D'Arcy, Grace Linhares and Kaela Milewski took second.

    Montville H.S. Athletic Hall of Fame
