    Local roundup: Sanders, Papp are winners of Mystic Half-Marathon

    Mystic — William  Sanders of Wethersfield won the Mystic Half-Marathon on Sunday and Niantic's Megan Papp was the top female finisher.

    Sanders finished in a time of 1:07.01 and Papp came in 12th with a time of 1:27.38, one spot ahead of Molly Evak of Pawcatuck (1:27.55). Rounding out the top 10 were Everett Hackett of West Hartford (1:08.15), Daisuke Nagai of Hamden (1:23.05), Mystic's Stanley Mickus (1:23.50), Jonathan Healey (1:23.52), Richard Hastings of New London (1:24.35), Brian Chakulski (1:25.50), Peter Zelken of Groton (1:26.16), Victor Stevens (1:27.03) and Groton's Ryan Gauthier (1:27.16).

    In the 10K race, Scott Mindel of Arlington, Mass., won with a time of 32:58 and Emily Zaccardi of Brookline, Mass., was second at 38:58 — the top women's finisher. Local runners finishing in the top 10 were Alex Duncan of Mystic (4th, 39:55) and T.J. Dooling of Pawcatuck (7th, 42:11).

    In other races:

    • A.V. Florio of North Haven won the Great Strides for Great Neck 5K in Waterford with a time of 19:40. Hartmut Derwaldt II of Pawcatuck was second (20:56) and Colchester's Nicole Leblanc was third at 21:06, winning the women's title.

    Also finishing in the top 10 were Brian Williams of Middletown (21:23), Alli West of New London (22:01), Mac Ordonio Jr. of Mystic (22:06) and Waterford residents Kate Cygler (22:47), Jim Wofley (23:09), Matthew Labreque (23:33) and Chris MacHennel (23:53). 

    College baseball

    • UConn completed a three-game sweep of Central Florida, winning the American Athletic Conference game 3-0. Willis Montgomerie (4-3) went six innings for the win, allowing three hits with eight strikeouts and three walks. Patrick Ruotolo pitched the final two innings to earn his seventh save. Willy Yahn had two hits for UConn (29-22, 11-9), which has won six straight.

    Auto racing

    • Rain cut short the regular Saturday program at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl, with the 35-lap SK Modified race being suspended with 18 laps remaining. Diego Monahan of Quaker Hill was leading the event, which will be resumed at a later date. The 25-lap Limited Sportsman feature was also rained out.

    Before the rains came Ray Christian III of Uncasville won the 30-lap Late Model race and Quaker Hill's Jordan Hadley won the 25-lap Mini Stock race. Jason Palmer was second in the Late Model race and Old Lyme's Jeff Smith finished third. Christopher Ivory of Oakdale finished second in the Mini Stock race and Ian Brew was third.

    The program began with Ron Silk winning the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour's New England Cycle Center 161.
