    College basketball: Reserves lift Mitchell women past Becker 51-44

    New London — Mitchell College received a vital contribution from its reserves in a 51-44 victory over Becker College on Saturday in a New England Collegiate Conference women's basketball game.

    Camille Staggers came off the bench to contribute 10 points, nine rebounds and a career-high four steals in 17 minutes for the Mariners, whose reserves outscored Becker's 23-6. Ashleigh Beauford (team-high 10 rebounds) and Jordan Lohneiss (eight points) also provided a spark.

    The victory snapped a three-game losing streak. Allegra Jones had a team-best 13 points and Jessica Shepherd added 10 for the Mariners (5-11, 5-4) in a game that had a combined 48 turnovers.

    In other games:

    • Coast Guard Academy hung tough with New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference power MIT (14-3, 8-1) before fading late, losing 61-54. Leading by four with seven minutes left, the Bears were outscored 17-6 the rest of the way. Gil Gerton had 12 points and 10 rebounds, Breanna Wood had nine points and nine rebounds and reserve Laura Irish added 11 points and five rebounds for Coast Guard (3-13, 1-7).

    • Unbeaten and top-ranked Tufts led 38-16 at halftime and went on to beat Connecticut College 72-48 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Liz Malman had 15 points and Mairead Hynes scored 10 for Conn (11-6, 2-4). Tufts is 18-0, 6-0.

    • Massasoit hit a shot at the buzzer and beat Avery Point 76-75 in a NJCAA Region 21 game. Meagan Bianchi scored 31 points, Mia Dupuis had 23 points and seven rebounds and Stonington's Tatyana LaFrance Boyce had 10 points for the Pointers (9-7, 3-3).

    Men's basketball

    • Stonington's Bobby Atkins made a 3-pointer in overtime at the buzzer, lifting Avery Point to a 76-73 win over Massasoit in a NJCAA Region 21 game. Tyrel Martinez of New London had 20 points, Remy Bonser of New London scored 17 and Will Orr added 13 for the Pointers (8-6, 8-5).

    • St. Thomas More lost to Bridgton in the final of the Bridgton Winter Classic, 78-70, to snap an 11-game winning streak. EJ Anosike had 16 points and 17 rebounds, Tyrei Randall had 17 points and eight rebounds and Maceo Jack scored 16 for T-More (13-6). The Chancellors beat Gould Academy 80-64 in Friday's first round. Randall had 17 points and Anosike and Jack scored 16 each.  

    • Senior Joey Flannery had a game-high 29 points annd grabbed 10 rebounds while Babson made 18 3-pointers as the No. 1 ranked Beavers beat Coast Guard 87-72 in the NEWMAC. Babson (16-1, 6-0) has won 17 straight NEWMAC games, the longest conference winning streak in Division III. Freshman Patrick Witkowski had a team-high 18 points for CGA (5-11, 1-5) while freshman Max Lampe (14), freshman Justin Kane and (11) sophomore Luke Daniels (11) were all in double figures for the Bears. Lampe also had a career-high nine rebounds.

    • Conn College lost to No. 4 Tufts 100-83 in the NESCAC. Tyler Rowe had 19 points and four assists, Zuri Pavlin had 14 points and David Labossiere and Lee Messier scored 10 each for Conn (11-6, 2-4).

    • Kyle Credle and Samuel Durodola scored 27 points each as Becker beat Mitchell 80-67 in an NECC game. Domenico Santiago had 18 points and 13 rebounds, Hasani Williams scored 11, Alan Morgan had 10 points and five assists and Waterford's Geary McLeod came off the bench for 10 points and five steals for Mitchell (2-13, 2-5).
