    Local roundup: Old Lyme tops Fitch in boys' tennis

    Old Lyme — Old Lyme swept singles play en route to a 4-3 win over Fitch in a nonleague boys' tennis match on Thursday.

    Adam Czarnecki, Jeff Zhang, Conner Wyman and Morgan Greenho won in straight sets for Old Lyme (6-4). Fitch (1-4) got doubles wins from the teams of Gabe Messina-Francis DelCampo and Chris Russo-Ben Flax and also picked up a forfeit win at No. 3.

    In other matches:

    • East Lyme beat NFA 7-0 in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I match. Eric Wu and Matei Coiculescu won singles matches for the Vikings (5-0, 2-0), who also received two forfeit wins. Davon Chen, Eric Gu, Conrad French, Finn Power, Ashish Joshi and Sumeet Kadian teamed by to sweep doubles, losing just two games.

    • St. Bernard No. 1 singles player Alex Zuczek remained undefeated with a straight set win, leading the Saints past Montville, 5-1 in an ECC Division III match between two short-handed team. Kyle Keene posted a win at No. 2 singles and No. 3 Jordan Huang also won for the Saints (2-1, 2-0). The Indians fell to 0-5, 0-3.

    • Adam Pinch, Fadi Hage and David Perez all won their singles matches as Waterford beat Bacon Academy, 5-2, in an ECC Division II match. Hugh Mugavero and David Blagden won at doubles for Waterford (3-3, 1-1) as did Jayson Page and David Hausmann.

    H.S. girls' tennis

    • St. Bernard swept its singles matches against Montville in its 5-2 ECC Division III win. Michaela Abate, Wendy Bessette, Anna McKinley, and Lauren O'Donnell won at singles for the Saints (3-1, 3-0). Kaila Specace and Amber Caldwell also won the No. 1 doubles match. The teams of Man Wei Chen and Jenny Alercon, and Christine Zhu and Layla Wu, won for the Indians (0-6, 0-4).

    • Waterford beat Bacon 7-0 in an ECC Division II match. Alaina Moger, Sarah Verity, Sophie Wang and Sophie Impellitieri each won their singles matches 6-0, 6-0 for the Lancers (4-2, 1-1).

    • Keelin Hurtt and Brynn McGlinchey posted singles wins for Old Lyme in a 4-3 loss to Coginchaug in the Shoreline Conference. Sophie Warlitz and Emily O'Brien combined for a three-set win at No. 3 doubles for the Wildcats.

    H.S. baseball

    • Fitch jumped out to an early lead and held on for a 7-3 victory over Killingly. Hendrick Khoury's RBI double in the first inning pushed the Falcons (6-6) in front and he finished with two hits. Ryan Tuohy had two singles, a double and two RBI and winning pitcher Ian Cekala went four innings, allowing two hits and one earned run for the Falcons.

    • Trevor Delesdernier pitched a three-hitter as East Lyme beat Woodstock 1-0. Delesdernier struck out five with one walk. East Lyme (9-1) scored in the bottom of the second when Jackson Deweese scored on an infield single by Luke Leonard.

    • Adam Gibbs pitched a complete game and Connor Woodworth had two hits and two RBI, lifting Stonington past New London, 11-0. The Bears climbed to 4-4, and the Whalers fell to 2-6.

    H.S. boys' golf

    • Jack Ognisty shot a 39 to lead Stonington as it beat Woodstock Academy, 4-3, in its ECC Division II season-opener. Jack Glenn shot a 41 for Stonington (3-0, 1-0) and Will Cavaliere shot a 43. Woodstock’s Ryan Black was the medalist (38).

    • Montville suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Killingly 6-1 in its ECC Division II opener. Montville (7-1) beat E.O. Smith 5-2. Sam Gaboury (38) won his match against Killingly and Gaboury, Chris Bouchard and Brian O'Sullivan won matches against E.O. Smith. 

    • Cam Roberts earned medalist honors with a 38, leading Old Lyme past St. Bernard, 161-201, at Norwich Golf Course. Wheeler also beat St. Bernard, 5.5-1.5, in a Division III match. Mike Anderson shot a 44 to lead Wheeler (2-2, 2-0) while John Nelson had a team-low 48 for the Saints (0-7, 0-3). Old Lyme's Matt McCarthy fired a 40 and Mason Swaney added a 41.

    • Bacon Academy's Jake Guerra was the medalist with a 43, lifting Bacon Academy past Waterford, 5-2, in a Division II match at Great Neck Country Club. Glen Faber shot a team-best 44 for the Lancers (2-2, 0-2).

    • Grasso Tech's Hunter Brazee took medalist honors with a 49 as the Eagles beat Capital Prep in a CSC match, 227-231.

    H.S. girls' golf

    • Stonington beat NFA 212-252. Stonington's Emma Diamanti was the medalist with a 50. 

    College baseball

    • Mitchell College broke open the non-conference game with six runs in the eighth inning, beating Johnson & Wales University, 12-3, at Alumni Field. Mike Jason's pinch-hit, three-run homer highlighted the outburst. Kyle Hartenstein had a single, double and RBI and Norwich Tech graduate Bryce Bedard earned his first career win, pitching 3.1 innings in relief and allowing one run and three hits, for the Mariners (23-10).

    Women's lacrosse

    • Mitchell College dropped a 25-10 decision to Southern Vermont in the New England Collegiate Conference. Senior Ashley Murtha scored nine goals to get her 83 this season while adding a team-best nine draw controls and four ground balls for the Mariners. Willeen Pun also scored a goal for Mitchell (3-7, 2-6), which had only 10 players.

    Adams joins Sun, Cooper waived

    • Veteran post Danielle Adams joined the Connecticut Sun on Thursday, forcing them to waive rookie forward Shayla Cooper to make room on their 15-woman training camp roster.

    Adams was signed to a free agent contract on Feb. 22. She was drafted 20th (second round) in 2011 by the San Antonio Spurs and played five seasons there, averaging 11.4 points and 4.3 rebounds over 155 games. She was waived during training camp last year and didn’t play in the league. Adams just completed her season in Israel playing for Maccabi Ramat Gan and averaged 19.3 points and eight rebounds.

    Cooper was the 13th overall pick in April’s draft.
