    Local roundup: Waterford advances to LL baseball Section 3 title game

    Waterford — Waterford advanced to the Little League baseball (ages 11-12) state Section 3 title game with a 19-12 win over Cromwell on Friday night.

    Waterford, which beat Newington 14-6 on Thursday, hosts Newington again on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. The winner advances to the four-team state championship at Guilford, which begins on July 28.

    Mason Concascia singled, homered twice and drove in six runs to lead Waterford's 16-hit attack. Nathan Hynes and Sean O'Connell also homered and Jabez White, Evan McCue, Hynes and O'Connell had two hits each. White and McCue combined on the mound for the win. In Thursday's game, Jackson Long hit a three-run homer and Anthony Sharples had a two-run shot. Sean Salvador and Sharples had two hits each.

    NE Babe Ruth (14)

    • Waterford lost its opener in the New England Regional at Trumbull, losing to Hingham-Hull (Mass.) 8-4. Ben Jerome was 2-for-2 with two walks and scored twice, Trey Brennan had three hits and two RBI and Ryan Bakken doubled for Waterford while Robert Zawacki and Bakken drove in runs. Waterford has two games remaining in pool play, playing Vermont champion Brattleboro Saturday at 10 a.m., and Pittsfield (Mass.) Sunday at 4 p.m. All eight teams advance to Monday's quarterfinals.

    Schooners win

    • John Trousdale (Alabama) was 3-for-3, leading the Mystic Schooners to a 6-3 win over the Valley Blue Sox in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game. Garet Griffin (Mitchell) and Trousdale had doubles and Tommy Jew (Cal Santa Barbera) had two hits for the Schooners (19-16). Jared Gallagher (Central Connecticut) got the win in relief and Logan Lessard (Bryant) struck out three in the ninth to earn his second save.

    Tigers fall

    • The Brooklyn Cyclones scored six runs in the top of the eighth inning, pulling away for a 10-6 win over the Connecticut Tigers in a New York-Penn League game at Dodd Stadium. Jordan Pearce was 3-for-3 with two RBI, Luke Burch singled, tripled and drove in two runs and Teddy Hoffman homered for the Tigers (14-14).
