The Mystic Schooners will begin defense of their New England Collegiate Baseball League championship at home.

The Schooners (26-17), despite being idle on Monday, clinched the No. 2 seed in the Southern Division when Plymouth (24-19) lost to New Beford 3-2.

Mystic, which has won nine of its last 10 games, plays its regular-season final at home on Tuesday against North Adams at Fitch High School (6 p.m.). The Schooners will then play the third-seeded Pilgrims on Thursday at Fitch in a one-game playoff.

The winner will advance to play No. 1 Ocean State in a best-of-three series for the Southern Division title starting Friday in South Kingstown, R.I.

On Sunday, Schooners players John Trousdale and Tommy Jew contributed to the Southern Division effort as they played to a 5-5 tie with the North in the NECBL All-Star Game at North Adams, Mass. Jew (Cal Santa Barbara) had an RBI triple in the fourth inning and came around to score on a wild pitch. Trousdale (Alabama) was 2-for-2 and scored a run.

Local golf

• Defending champion Adam Rainaud, the former assistant pro at Black Hall Club in Old Lyme, shot a 3-under 69 and is tied for fifth after the opening round of the 83rd Connecticut Open at Ellington Ridge Country Club. Three-time champion Frank Bensel of Century CC (Purchase, N.Y.) and Jeffrey Evanier of Clinton CC share the lead a 5-under 67.

The top 40 players (plus ties) after Tuesday's second round will advance to Wednesday's final round. Among the local golfers still in contention are Black Hall assistant Matt Smith, Black Hall amateur Phil Perry and Lake of Isles assistant Robert Taggert III. All three are tied for 31st after shooting 1-over 73s.

College honors

• Four men's of Coast Guard Academy's track and field program have named named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic individual team for the 2016-17 indoor and outdoor track and field season.

Senior Caitlin Parker, a member of the women's team, ranked 23rd among Division III competitors in the javelin, just missing out on her second trip to the NCAA outdoor championships. It was her first USTFCCCA all-academic honor.

Junior Raeford Penny and sophomores Benjamin Taminger and Nicholas Frystak were named to the men's team for the first time. Penny and Frystak were members of the Bears' 4x800-meter relay team which competed in the national indoor championships while Taminger was ranked No. 48 nationally in the 800 indoors.

To qualify All-Academic honors, student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.30, competed in an NCAA indoor or outdoor championship, or finished the regular season ranked in the national Top 50 in an individual event or Top 35 in a relay event.

Speedbowl news

• The New London-Waterford Speedbowl and Mr. Rooter Truck Series will be merging their two series for the remainder of the season, Speedbowl general manager George Whitney announced over the weekend. The two will run dual points and championships, including a five-event schedule at the Speedbowl on Aug. 5 and 12, Sept. 2 and 16, and the Speedbowl's season finale in Oct.
