    Local colleges: Conn field hockey upsets No. 8 Hamilton 1-0

    New London — Meghan Lembo scored 47 seconds into the game and it held up as Connecticut College beat No. 8 Hamilton 1-0 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference field hockey match on Saturday.

    The Camels (3-4, 1-3) were outshot 17-1 after the goal but Jacqueline Murphy (two), goalie Gabby Peterson and Berklee Vaillancourt combined for four defensive saves. Jamie Navoni assisted on the goal.

    Men's soccer

    • Coast Guard Academy scored twice in the first half and held on to beat Emerson 2-0 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. Tyler Furry and Gio Ottomanelli had goals, Ryan Dandan and Patrick Palermo-Re had assists and Dakota Harich made one save for the Bears (4-2-1, 1-1).

    • Freshman Justin Miranda scored in the 31st minute as Conn College remained undefeated with a 1-0 win over Hamilton in the NESCAC. A.J. Marcucci made five saves for Conn (5-0-2, 2-0-2).

    • Abdou Mbacke Thiam scored his team-leading fifth goal in the 26th minute to lift UConn to a 2-0 victory over Temple in the American Athletic Conference opener for both schools. Nike Petridis added an insurance goal in the 80th minute for the Huskies (3-2-1), who were outshot 7-4, and goalie Scott Levene made seven saves.

    Women's soccer

    • Mitchell College opened its New England Collegiate Conference schedule with a 5-0 loss to Becker. Lindsey Keith scored four goals for Becker (5-3, 2-0) and Old Lyme's Kyra Teixeira assisted on the last one. Jordan Lohneiss made 13 saves for Mitchell (1-4).

    • Gabrielle Auzenbergs broke a scoreless tie in the 80th minute as Coast Guard defeated WPI 1-0 in the NEWMAC. Auzenbergs took a long cross from Kat Retz and bounced a shot over the WPI goalkeeper. Rachel Boohar made four saves in goal for the Bears (4-3, 1-1). The Engineers (5-4, 0-2) held a 13-8 edge in shots.

    • Conn College stayed unbeaten with a 1-0 win over Hamilton in a NESCAC game. Freshman Kat Norton scored in the 48th minute, knocking in a rebound off a Lauren Steele shot. Bryanna Montalvo made two saves for Conn (6-0-1, 3-0-1).

    Men's cross country

    • Coast Guard finished 20th at the Purple Valley Classic at Williams College. Andre Gallant led the Bears in 85th place (28:19). Also scoring for Coast Guard were Colton Atkinson (28:48), Jacob Panning (28:56), Alex Kearney (29:03) and Matthew Doyle (29:14).

    • Mitchell finished seventh at the Blazer Invitational at Chicopee, Mass. New London's David Still led the Mariners with a 10th-place finish on the 8K course in 31:47.

    Women's cross country

    • Freshman Kaitlyn Mooney placed second and the ran the fastest 6K in Coast Guard history during the Purple Valley Classic at Williams. Mooney finished in 22:02, finishing only behind two-time All-American Taryn Cordani of Ithaca. The previous fastest CGA time in a 6K race was by Beth Gorin (22:16) in 2013. Rachel Burchill (25:28), Kirsten Carson (25:40), Nina Ragle (26:13) and Maeve Roach (26:43) also scored points for the Bears, who placed 17th.

    • Mitchell finished seventh at the Blazer Invitational at Chicopee, Mass. Mitchell's top runner was Kate McCormack, who finished 44th (32:36).

    Volleyball

    • Coast Guard dropped a pair of matches, losing to No. 15 MIT 25-21, 25-15, 25-17 in the NEWMAC and Hunter 25-15, 23-25, 25-13, 25-23 in a nonleague match. Freshman Bridget Boyle had 27 kills and 24 digs on the day for Coast Guard (9-5, 2-2). Makenna Martin had 42 assists, Michelle McGill had 29 digs and Alexi Deane had 11 digs for the Bears.
