Black Wolves score last seven goals to beat Stealth 13-9

Mohegan — Shawn Evans had four points as the New England Black Wolves defeated the Vancouver Stealth 13-9 in a National Lacrosse League game on Friday night at Mohegan Sun Arena.

The game was defined by runs, with New England (2-1) having one six-goal and another seven-goal spurt while Vancouver (0-3) had a seven-goal run of its own.

The Black Wolves' six-goal run came after the Stealth had taken a quick 2-0 lead.

Reilly O'Connor put New England on the board with just 43 seconds left in the opening quarter to make 2-1 and Jay Thorimbert scored six seconds later after winning the ensuing faceoff to tie the game.

Kevin Crowley gave the Black Wolves the lead just 42 seconds into the second quarter, Kyle Buchanan scored a pair of goals just 28 seconds part to make it 5-2 and Crowley's second goal of the night just 1:12 later extended New England's lead to 6-2.

That's when Vancouver went to work. The Stealth scored the final two goals of the first half to close within 6-4, then rattled off five consecutive goals in the third period to take a 9-6 advantage into the fourth quarter.

But the Black Wolves responded. Buchanan's third goal of the night cut the deficit to 9-7 and began a seven-goal onslaught that put New England in command. Evans and Joe Coyle followed with short-handed goals to tie the score and Adam Bomberry's goal with 5:11 remaining gave New England the lead for good, 10-9.

O'Connor scored his second goal two minutes later before Colton Watkinson's first NLL goal with 1:05 left made it 12-9 before Evans added an empty-netter to complete the scoring.

Thorimbert continued his streak of 15-plus face-off victories, nabbing 16-of-25 (64 percent). Brandon Goodwin led the Stealth with five points on two goals and three assists.

New England doesn't play again until Jan. 13 at Rochester.
