    Local roundup: Groton/Mystic wins LL softball opener

    Waterford  — Charlotte Cabral pitched a five-hitter with five strikeouts as Groton/Mystic beat Waterford 5-4 in the opening game of the District 10 Little League softball age 11-12 championship series on Sunday.

    The best-of-three series continues at Rotary Park in Waterford on Monday at 6 p.m. A third game, if necessary, would be Tuesday at 6 p.m., also at Rotary Park.

    Sydney Lyon and Cabral had two hits each for Groton/Mystic. Anna Dziecinny had two hits for Waterford and also struck out eight batters in five innings.

    Tigers lose

    • The Connecticut Tigers' losing streak reached eight with a 7-1 loss to the Hudson Valley Renegades in the New York-Penn League. The game was called after seven innings due to rain. Jose King and Teddy Hoffman had doubles for the Tigers (2-8).

    Zone 6 Legion baseball

    • Robert Otanez pitched a two-hitter as New London beat zone-leading Waterford 11-1 in five innings. Hendrik Khoury had three hits, drove in three runs and scored three runs for New London (7-7). Elijah Martinez had a two-run triple, Aaron Beeney scored three runs and Thomas Brown had two hits for New London. Waterford is 8-2.  

    District 6 Babe Ruth (15)

    • Ryan O'Connell allowed two hits over five innings, had three hits and scored three times as Waterford beat Groton 13-1. Ryan Bakken scored three runs, Trey Brennan had two hits and scored three times and Dan Driscoll had two hits for Waterford. Sam Lambert had two hits and scored a run for Groton.

    District 6 Babe Ruth (14)

    • Harley Perreno, Rowan Mundell and Julian Baez had four hits each as East Lyme used a 22-hit attack to beat Pawcatuck 25-0 in five innings. Nathan Licitra pitched a one-hitter with eight strikeouts and had two hits with two RBI. Matt Bradley singled, doubled twice and scored three times and Thomas Peck (three RBI) and Avery Wyman had two hits each for East Lyme. Perreno had a triple, five RBI and scored four times, Mundell scored four runs and drove in four runs and Baez drove in three runs. Patrick Obrey had Pawcatuck's hit.

    • Preston Tabor had three hits as Waterford beat Groton 18-4. Jack Lathrop singled and doubled and Logan Avin had a double for Waterford. Kevin Fizemia had a double for Groton.

    District 10 LL baseball (9-10)

    • Jack Treat and Bradley Strickland pitched three innings each as Montville beat Mystic 11-4. Treat was the winning pitcher and Luke Chapman, PJ Evans and Sebastian Flores had two hits each for Montville. Jacob Schrage had a double for Mystic.

    • Desmond Powers struck out six to earn the victory and drove in three runs as New London beat Pawcatuck 19-0 in four innings. Eddie Torres had four hits, drove in three runs and scored four times and JJ Santiago drove in three runs for New London. Emanuel Watrous had the only hit for Pawcatuck.
