    Local roundup: Gathy sparks Waterford past NFA in girls' swimming

    Waterford — Elyse Gathy won a pair of events on Tuesday, leading Waterford to a 98-80 win over Norwich Free Academy in an Eastern Connecticut Conference girls' swimming meet.

    Gathy won the 100-meter freestyle in 1:09.56 and the 100 backstroke in 1:10.92. Sophomore Tallah Ryan of Waterford won the diving with a personal-best 199.65 points. Ella Dyjak, Elizabeth Hawkins and Aidan Sturm also won events for Waterford (7-2, 6-1) and Emma Geer, Jenna Morin, Isabella Bove-Dumin and Jayne Darras helped the Lancers win two relays.

    Gloria Ng of NFA (2-8, 2-6) won the 200 individual medley in 2:46.64 and the 100 butterfly in 1:21.53. Danielle Toppa of NFA won the 100 breaststroke and teamed with Sophia Tung, Lane Perkins and Ng to win the 400 freestyle relay.

    In other meets:

    • Olivia Strelevitz and Madeline Johanson each won two events and were on two winning relay teams as Ledyard beat Fitch/Stonington 104-65. Strelevitz won the 200-yard freestyle (2:08.01) and 100 butterfly (1:03.99) and Johanson won the 200 individual medley (2:29.97) and 100 breaststroke (1:19.03).

    Gabrielle Schaufler won the 500 freestyle and was on two winning relay teams and Emily Goodrich, Erin Lyons, Alexandra Martinez-Garcia, Jenabelle Felmy and Ellie Shea helped Ledyard (5-3, 5-3) sweep the relays. Paulomi Sardar of Fitch/Stonington (3-5, 3-5) won the 50 freestyle (28.13) and 100 freestyle (1:00.41) and teammate Madison Rea won the 100 backstroke.

    H.S. volleyball

    • Abby Diamantini had 21 digs and three aces as Montville swept Bacon Academy 25-21, 25-18, 25-18. Mackenzie Ullrich had 13 assists and six aces, Gabby Beal had 11 digs, Savanna Perkins had six kills and Maya Hillman added five kills for Montville (11-5).

    • Wheeler beat Grasso Tech 25-10, 25-13, 25-23 in a nonleague match. Sarah Sparcklin had 12 aces and six kills for Wheeler (9-7) and Michelle Warren had 14 digs for Grasso (0-16).

    Men's soccer

    • Christian Urena scored in the 79th minute to break a 3-3 tie and lead Mitchell College to a 4-3 win over Elms in a New England Collegiate Conference game. Quinn Outerbridge, who assisted on Urena's goal, also scored along with Jack Cullen of Pawcatuck and Bryan Ramos for Mitchell (6-7, 4-2) while David Hernandez of Norwich had an assist and Seth Strader of Preston made four saves.

    • Robbie Fugett had two assists as Coast Guard scored all of its goals in the first half and held on for a 3-2 win over Mass Maritime. Noa Pagatpatan, Patrick Palermo-Re and Landon Klopfenstein scored, Niantic’s William Bragaw had three saves, and James Morrison had two saves for the Bears (5-7-3). AJ Bubencik and Jacob Crawford scored for the Buccaneers (4-9-1).

    • Josh Burnett had two goals and an assist as UConn beat Boston College 3-2 in a nonleague game. Abdou Mbacke Thiam had a goal and an assist, Cole Venner had an assist and Austin Aviza made eight saves for UConn (8-2-2). 

    Women's soccer

    • Mitchell College lost to league-leading Lesley in an NECC game, 4-0. Drew Johndrow made 16 saves for Mitchell (1-12, 0-7), who were outshot 34-2 by Lesley (13-3, 7-0).

    • Jess Frost had a goal and two assists as Emerson downed Coast Guard, 4-1, in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference game. Veronica Alberts and Modesty Sanchez scored for the Lions (9-5-1, 5-2-0). Felicia Lombardi scored for the Bears (7-7-1, 4-4-0).

    Women's volleyball

    • Amanda Dake had 14 kills and 14 digs as Coast Guard beat Smith 26-24, 25-17, 25-27, 25-13 in a NEWMAC match. Makenna Martin had 39 assists and seven digs, Veronica Hine had 14 digs and eight aces, and Angelou Dunton had eight digs and three kills for Coast Guard (17-8, 5-5). Kimani Freeman had 20 assists, five aces and six digs for the Pioneers (3-18, 0-9).

    H.S. field hockey

    • Molly Quiles scored three goals as Waterford beat NFA 8-21 in an ECC game. Cassidy Susi and Jess SanJuan had a goal and an assist each and Hannah Buczkowski, Chelsea Santos and Kasey Kirchhoff had goals for Waterford (6-5, 6-3). Dakota Burns scored for NFA (0-15, 0-11).

    • Bridget O'Leary's goal lifted Fitch/Ledyard to a 1-0 win over Killingly in an ECC game. Zoe Pearse had an assist for Fitch/Ledyard (6-7, 4-5).
