A Unique Perspective on Madison’s Downtown Renovations

Madison residents who want to keep tabs on progress on the downtown beautification project can watch the ongoing work on the Internet.

The town's Economic Development Commission (EDC) has installed a webcam atop the Scranton Memorial Library at 801 Boston Post Road. To see work on the project, all you need to do is go to www.madisonedc.com/development/live-web-cam.

Economic Development Commissio• Chairman Ryan Duques said, "As part of the EDC's effort to keep the community involved and informed about the upcoming construction downtown, the commission dedicated part of its small annual budget to installing a camera atop the Scranton Memorial Library, where vantage of the downtown is amazing, straight up the center median of Route 1, looking west.''

Duques said the camera, which was installed by the town's technology department, led by Arthur Sickle, is capturing images every two minutes, creating a time-lapse video, which is available on the EDC's website.

"As the construction starts downtown, residents will be able to view the progress from above, in quick fashion,'' said Duques. "At the completion of the construction, a full video will be produced of the construction progress from start to finish."

While many components of the project, such as the relocation of the wires and poles on the south side of town, have been underway for years, the major streetscape construction will likely commence early next spring.

Duques said in addition to the video feed, the EDC's website will also include updated construction information including any potential road/sidewalk closures, detours, etc.

"While construction has been designed to minimize impact on downtown traffic and pedestrian traffic to businesses, we will publicize as far in advance as possible any temporary closures,'' added Duques.

The public will be invited to several anticipated public discussion sessions early next year to learn more about the Madison Center Project, the EDC chairman said.
