Mystic - Karen N. Barthelson, who has been executive director of the Mystic Arts Center since 2006, is retiring.

The Stonington resident will leave MAC early this year but will stay on as the center's board searches for a replacement. She will also help with the transition to new leadership.

Barthelson has been involved with MAC since May 1998, having served in positions including director of exhibitions and collections. She has been an Elected Artist Member since 1995, and she plans to pursue personal interests - including fine art appraisal and painting - after leaving the center.

In a written statement, MAC Board President Mary Anne Stets said, "Karen has accomplished a great deal in her time here. We are sorry to see her go but understand she wants to move on to the next phase of her life. MAC is grateful to have been the beneficiary of her hard work and dedication along with her love of the arts."
