Man accused of conspiring to steal from City of Norwich

A man accused of conspiring with his girlfriend and others to steal from the City of Norwich pleaded not guilty to forgery and larceny charges when he appeared Monday in New London Superior Court.

According to Norwich Police, Peterson Success, 27, of 585 E. Main St. cashed a fraudulent city check for $745 in his name at the Walmart on Salem Turnpike in January and accompanied his girlfriend, Katriona Belizaire, and his friend, Ricardo Jeanty, as they cashed forged checks in the amounts of $845 and $945 at local Walmart stores.

Other suspects cashed or deposited forged checks totaling $5,700, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

Police began investigating after Brian Curtin, treasurer for the City of Norwich, reported that Bank of America had contacted him about suspicious checks. Curtin said the checks were not issued by the City of Norwich but that the funds were issued from the city’s general fund.

Confronted by police, Success denied knowing the checks were forged. He said that after completing an online survey he had received his check in the mail.

Success is free on a $25,000 bond and is due back in court on April 23. Katriona has been arrested on similar charges and is due back in court on April 2.
