Lyme-Old Lyme school board approves budget for referendum

Old Lyme — The Lyme-Old Lyme Board of Education voted Monday to send the proposed $32,547,409 school budget for 2015-16 to its district budget meeting and referendum next month.

The proposed budget for 2015-16, which the board adopted in February, calls for 1.83 percent more in spending than in the district's current budget.

Lyme comprises 20.8 percent of student enrollment within the regional school district, based on student enrollment figures. Old Lyme is home to 79.2 percent of students in the district.

The cost to the towns would be $6,559,697 for Lyme and $25,014,080 for Old Lyme.

The board's vote on Monday followed a brief budget hearing in which no one from the public spoke. Budget books, available at the meeting, are slated to be posted on the school district's website.

At the end of the meeting, Board of Education Chairman James Witkins thanked Superintendent of Schools Ian Neviaser for preparing a budget that addressed the board's priorities and kept increases at a "very moderated level" for the referendum.

The school board will hold its official district budget meeting at 7:30 p.m. on May 4, which will adjourn to referendum the following day. The budget referendum will take place from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. May 5 in Old Lyme and Lyme.
