Town meeting tonight on Stonington elementary school project

Stonington — A town meeting will be held today at 7 p.m. at the high school on a proposal to bond $69 million to renovate and expand the aging Deans Mill and West Vine Street schools.

The meeting will give residents an additional opportunity to comment on the plan. No vote will be held as a referendum has been slated for April 21.

The plan calls for renovating West Vine Street School and building a 34,000-square-foot addition and renovating Deans Mill School and constructing a 40,000-square-foot addition. State reimbursement is expected to decrease the cost to taxpayers to $52.3 million.

The project would be completed in time for the 2019-20 school year. The schools will hold students in pre-kindergarten through grade 5 and 115-year-old West Broad Street School will close. The Board of Selectmen meanwhile is creating a committee to study options for the future of West Broad Street School.

The town needs to submit an application for state reimbursement by the June 30 deadline. This means that if the referendum is rejected, the project would be delayed at least one year.

Comment threads are monitored for 48 hours after publication and then closed.
