Hewitt Farm Dam project concludes without wing wall

North Stonington — The repair of the dam at Hewitt Farm, the final project remaining after 2010 flooding damaged several town structures, has wrapped up.

At least, First Selectman Nick Mullane said, the $455,000 project is "done as far as we want to go right now."

Mullane previously had asked contractor Mattern Construction Inc. to build an additional 15-by-10-foot wing wall on the Shunock River side of the dam nearest to state Route 2 to prevent erosion.

But, he said, Mattern Construction wanted more than $11,000 to build the wall — a price he considered too high for a project he said would take a week or less and could use several stones at the construction site free of charge.

"Because we have to resolve a few cost issues, I did not feel I had money to take and do the wing wall now," Mullane said. "The town can do it later for less."
