Mystic Half Marathon goes smoothly, boosts business

Mystic — Stonington police and organizers reported no problems with Sunday morning’s Mystic Half Marathon and 10K and its 1,800 runners.

The race, which was sponsored by the Mystic Rotary Club and organized by the Hartford Marathon Foundation, brought large numbers of runners and their families to the restaurants, shops, hotels and attractions of Mystic over the weekend.

“Everything went as planned. The marathon foundation did everything they said they would do,” said Capt. Todd Olson.

The Rotary club’s Barry Saluk said the event benefited the community, businesses and charities that will receive an estimated $30,000 in fundraising that the club generated from the race.

“It was great event. Everything was just perfect. Couldn’t have been better,” he said about the first-year race. “I think this will become a classic Mystic event in the coming years.”

There was a runners expo on Saturday at the Hilton Mystic and Saluk said Kelley’s Pace running shoe shop had its busiest day ever on Saturday. Saluk said runners liked the ability to roll out of bed at one of the nearby hotels and walk to the start at Olde Mistick Village.

Olson said the only traffic issue occurred about 6:30 a.m. as late arriving runners created congestion along Route 27 as they tried to make the 7 a.m. start. But Olson said the congestion only occurred for a short period as police worked to clear the area. He said there were no major medical problems although one runner was taken to the hospital with a non life-threatening problem. In a few weeks, Olson said Stonington and Groton police will meet with Hartford Marathon officials to discuss the race and any possible changes needed for next year’s event. Both police departments had earlier praised the marathon foundation for its professionalism and cooperation in staging the race. The Rotary club also assembled 250 volunteers to help with the race.

Saluk said one potential change for next year would be to shift the date of the race to early in May, which would help businesses before the tourist season gets underway.

“It would be like an extra holiday weekend for them,” he said.
