Law Enforcement Special Olympics torch run begins Wednesday

The first two of 10 legs of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Connecticut Special Olympics kick off in eastern Connecticut Wednesday with representatives from local law enforcement agencies running alongside Special Olympics athletes.

The statewide event runs from June 3 to June 5, will cover more than 500 miles and pass through more than 100 cities and towns. More than 1,500 law enforcement representatives will participate in the organization’s largest fundraiser.

The Torch Run precedes the Special Olympics Summer Games, which starts on June 6 at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven.

Leg 1 of the run begins at 8:48 a.m. at the A&P parking lot on Halls Road in Old Lyme and passes through East Lyme, Waterford, New London, Groton, Stonington, North Stonington and Ledyard.

Participants include correction officers from York Correctional Institution, representatives from the Groton U.S. Navy submarine base and officers from the Waterford, New London and Groton police departments.

Leg 2 begins in Putnam and passes through Killingly, Plainfield, Griswold, Lisbon, Norwich, Montville, Preston and Ledyard. Runners include representatives from the state police and Putnam, Norwich and Montville police departments.

Both legs finish at Foxwoods Resort Casino, where a rally will be held on the patio of the bingo hall.

Special Olympics Connecticut provides year-round sports training and competitions for more than 14,000 athletes, individuals with intellectual disabilities, and Unified Partners, the athletes’ teammates.
