State Sen. Andrew Maynard to host Great Gatsby Gala

Mystic — State Sen. Andrew Maynard, D-18th District, is scheduled to host a Great Gatsby Gala at the Inn at Mystic on Friday night.

The announcement for the gala, which is being sponsored by the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Westerly-Pawcatuck Area Chamber of Commerce, states that Maynard, of Stonington, will host the event “as our own Jay Gatsby,” the young millionaire at the center of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel. The event, held in the Haley Mansion, will have a Roaring Twenties theme.

Lisa Konicki , the executive director of the Greater Westerly-Pawcatuck Area Chamber of Commerce, said Monday that Maynard will greet guests. She said Maynard, who has been a big supporter of the two chambers, agreed to host the event when asked by the two organizations. She said she also expected that Maynard will be toasted at the event for his ongoing recovery from a serious brain injury he suffered in a fall at his home last July.

Earlier this month Maynard appeared at the Stonington Community Center’s 70th birthday celebration, and Facebook photos showed him speaking to fellow Democrats at a gathering at the home of Stonington Democratic Town Committee Chairman Scott Bates.

Since his fall while moving a large object up an outside staircase in the early morning hours of July 21, 2014, Maynard and his family have declined to be interviewed about his recovery, return to the legislature and plans for the just-completed legislative session, saying as late as a few weeks ago that he was not yet able to conduct an interview because he is still working to improve his speech. He was easily re-elected to a fifth term last November despite being at a rehabilitation hospital and unable to campaign or debate.

Two weeks ago, after the state Senate narrowly approved Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s budget by a 19-17 vote, Senate Democratic spokesman Adam Joseph said Maynard would not be available for an interview. His comment was in response to a question by The Day asking if Maynard would be issuing a statement explaining his vote if he could not conduct an interview.

Instead, Joseph referred The Day to a statement on the budget issued by Senate President Martin M. Looney, D-New Haven, and Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff, D-Norwalk.

During the session, Maynard missed most of his legislative committee meetings, had not updated his constituent website since Jan. 7 and co-sponsored just one bill. But Joseph said Maynard had been “a consistent presence in Hartford,” missing just two days, participating in numerous votes, attending committee meetings and Senate caucuses, working on constituent issues and participating in meetings with advocates for public safety, education and culture-related matters.
