New London, East Lyme libraries awarded grant funding

New London — The Public Library of New London was selected as one of eight libraries across the state to receive a share of more than $46,000 in federal funding to offer a pre-literacy program.

The Connecticut State Library Board announced Wednesday that it will award the New London library $3,000 to "reach out to parents and guardians of children under the age of 4 to provide them with pre-literacy tools to help ensure that their children will arrive at school ready to read."

The library will hold "Every Child Ready to Read" programs in English and Spanish around the city to help guide parents as they teach their children how to read by focusing on reading, singing and reciting rhymes to their children at home.

East Lyme Public Library will also receive an award from the Connecticut State Library Board — $6,632 to offer full- and half-day workshops on "the various disciplines of filmmaking which include creative writing, storyboarding, cinematography, editing, and the use of technology" for middle school students.

The funding is made available by the state library board through the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Library Services and Technology Act.
