Power has been restored to many homes in the region following the severe thunderstorms that moved through the region on Tuesday.

Eversource Energy reports that 10,398 customers statewide remained without power at 5 p.m. That is less than 1 percent of Eversource's customers.

Locally, 438 customers in Salem are without electricity. Montville is reporting that 71 people are without power, 95 customers in Stonington and Old Lyme and another 60 in Lyme are also without electricity.

Downed trees damaged many power lines and the utility company said it could take several hours to clear tree limbs and restore power.

Norwich Public Utilities reported at 11 p.m. Tuesday that there were 1,100 outages, but by 9:45 a.m. today that number was down to 150.

NPU said this morning that it is focusing on the hardest hit areas in the city, including Cherry Hill Road, upper Ox Hill Road, Roosevelt Avenue, Cedar Street, Grant Court and Briar Hill Road.

The utility company said it has reached out to two utility crews from Massachusetts  and to three private contractors to assist with restoration efforts.  

As of result of the outages, the city along with the American Red Cross opened an emergency shelter Tuesday night at the Kelly Middle School on Mahan Drive for those who lost power. The shelter, which no one stayed in, closed early this morning.

Local police this morning did not report any road closures.
