Groton school construction proposal to be aired Wednesday

Groton — The School Facilities Initiative Task Force will present the proposed school construction plan to the public at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Groton Senior Center during Representative Town Meeting.

Residents are invited to attend the presentation or watch the meeting on Groton Municipal Television on Channel 2.

The construction proposal, called the Groton 2020 Plan, would build one new middle school next to Robert E. Fitch High School to create a campus environment for students in grades 6-12.

The plan would then build two elementary schools on the sites of Carl C. Cutler and West Side middle schools with magnet programs to attract students. Pleasant Valley, Claude Chester and S.B. Butler elementary schools would be closed.

The plan is intended to modernize the schools district, deal with buildings more than 60 years old and meet the state mandate for racial balance.

Comment threads are monitored for 48 hours after publication and then closed.
