Stonington PZC will get new chairman, streamline procedures

Stonington — The Planning and Zoning Commission will soon have a new chairman after selectmen appointed new alternate members and elevated two current alternate to regular positions on Monday.

The commission meets Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Mystic Middle School and is expected to name a new chairman to replace Ben Tamsky.

The selectmen named alternates A. Gardner Young and David Rathbun as regular members to replace Tamsky and Bob Mercer, whose terms had expired. They also appointed Harry Martin and Harry Boardsen as alternate members and reappointed Shawn Savoie as an alternate member.

Meanwhile, First Selectman George Crouse said Monday that the commission will use $25,000 to reorganize, revitalize and streamline its rules and regulations including creating a checklist for developers to more easily navigate the approval process and gain approval. He said doing this will save time and energy, avoid controversy and help the town shed it reputation of being tough on developers, something that he said has earned it the nickname of “Zonington.”

Crouse said the new commission will strive for “smart development” encouraging development where its appropriate to grow the grand list while ensuring the character of the town does not change.
