As sisters and store owners Susan Bly and Tina Bolton watched the morning downpour through the front windows of their 2nd Time Around Consignments shop in Uncasville on Sept. 30, they polished a teapot that they received from a new customer. Though one of many items available in the 2,600-square foot store located next to Nino’s Pizza along Route 32, the teapot was the center of attention during a Wednesday morning interview.

“We get very strange and sort of cool things all the time,” Bly said, standing opposite Bolton at the front register counter, which was filled with racks of handmade jewelry, including earrings, pins and bracelets for men and women.

As Bly looked to her sister’s hands, Bolton lifted the cleaning rag to reveal a monochromatic porcelain teapot in the shape of a racing motorcycle and a cyclist. A long spout was extended in place of a headlight, and the rider’s black backpack came off as a pot lid.

“Isn’t this neat? We got this from a consignor that signed up,” Bolton said.

After three years of running a store and accumulating consignments in Westerly, R.I., Bly and Bolton concluded that they needed more space. Since opening their consignment shop in Gristmill Plaza three months ago, the store now holds numerous porcelain lamps, a large Disney Genie cookie jar, an array of wedding gowns, shoes displayed on a handmade frame, dining and living room sets and a plethora of clothing on racks arranged by size and gender.

According to both Bly and Bolton, they rearrange the stock every day, and it “keeps them on their toes.”

“The way we have it set up, you can walk through an area multiple times and still see things that you missed,” Bolton said.

They recently sold a 1950s Zenith Cobra-matic record player and radio set, which would normally sell for prices hovering between $450 and $550 on the internet, they said. Bly and Bolton priced it at $240, citing their policy of “uptown quality with downtown prices.”

Since opening the Montville store in July, they said they have accumulated just under 100 consignment sign-ups. As far as signing up with the store goes, Bolton said, both owners are “really easy” with their contract arrangements, as they do not charge application fees and conduct monthly payouts for sold items.

Originally from northern Maine, both Bly and Bolton are Navy veterans who operated the store in Westerly, R.I. Bly served about 10 years as a jet mechanic; Bolton served for four years as a welder but said that her sister had a “much more glamorous Navy career.” Bly was stationed in multiple locations such as Guam, the Philippines, California, and Tokyo.

Bly and Bolton got out of their respective services within two weeks of each other and lived in Groton, where Bolton was stationed. However, they had to figure out their next steps.

“We knew we didn’t want to go back to Maine, so we started working at the Mystic Marriott and other places,” Bolton said.

Bolton added that the main reason behind their taste in consignments is rooted in familiarity with providing for themselves on a tight budget, as both Bly and Bolton are single mothers from divorce who struggled financially in the past. Bolton has two children; Bly, three, in addition to three grandchildren.

“We grew an appreciation for consignments when we realized that we could get nice quality items on a tight budget to be able to provide for our children,” Bolton said. “So we’re extremely particular about our take-ins.”

However, Bolton added that even though they appreciated consignment stores for themselves and their children, the store does not have items for children available due to a lack of space.

“We really wouldn’t want to have to move again,” Bolton laughed. “We’re already trying to move here to Montville.”

Bly and Bolton said their store is a particularly good stop for new college students and military staff who want to furnish their living spaces.

The 2nd Time Around Consignments store is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to about 5 p.m., 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and 12 to 4 p.m. on Sundays. For further questions, the store can be reached at (860) 934-9537.
