North Stonington Garden Club receives award for replanting after flood

North Stonington — The North Stonington Garden Club was honored with the Silver Award for Civic Development on Oct. 28 by the Connecticut Federated Garden Club for repairing and replanting gardens in North Stonington Village that were destroyed by flooding.

The 2010 flood of the Shunock River wreaked havoc on North Stonington Village, destroying or uprooting most of the gardens. The Garden Club was tasked in 2013 with creating a new design to restore the village's gardens.

The club worked with town staff between September 2013 and May 2014 to replant the Clock garden and the Village Green as well as landscaping the edges of each garden. Members planted dwarf crabapple trees and ornamental shrubs as well as hundreds of daffodil bulbs in the village.

The project was funded through the club's annual May Plant Sale, and the gardens are maintained through the Garden Club's Civic Planting Committee.
