Groton man charged after police find beaten woman

Groton — A Groton man was charged Wednesday after a woman was found dazed, cut and beaten in her home, her son sitting and shaking near a pool of blood, police said.

Natanael Rodriguez-Colon, 33, of 246 Branford Ave. was arraigned Wednesday on charges of second-degree assault, two counts of risk of injury to a minor and second-degree breach of peace.

New London Superior Court Judge Omar Williams ordered Rodriguez-Colon held on $20,000 cash bond. He remained jailed Thursday.

The judge issued three protective orders for the woman and her two children, and a mental health evaluation for Rodriguez-Colon.

A court appearance was set for Jan. 7. Rodriguez-Colon had not entered a plea as of Thursday.

A police description of the incident filed in court said Groton City police were called to a home at Branford Manor at 5:47 a.m. on Wednesday about a domestic assault with possible injuries.

Police found Rodriguez-Colon outside on the porch of a nearby home, and he put his hands up when they arrived, the report said.

Police found the woman in the second-floor hallway outside the bathroom, sitting on the floor, with her back against the wall and her face covered in blood, the report said.

She had “severe contusions located over both her left brow/forehead area and her right brow, with a laceration on her right eyelid. The laceration on (her) right eyelid was hidden by the contusion over her right brow,” said a police observation in the report.

She “was not conscious, alert or aware of her surroundings and could not remember the events that led to her injuries,” police observed in the report, adding that “when asked what hurts, she stated ‘everything.’”

The woman was taken by Groton Ambulance to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. Her condition was not immediately available.

Police do not identify the victims of domestic violence.

Police found one child unclothed and in a bath towel, physically shaking and sitting on the couch next to a puddle of blood on the floor, the report said.

A neighbor of the woman told police that Rodriguez-Colon knocked on her door at 5:55 a.m. and told her husband, “Call the cops, she’s on the floor. I beat her up.”

The woman told police that after she questioned Rodriguez-Colon about his Facebook profile "he ‘smashed’ her face into the floor, punched her face several times and kicked her,” the report said.

She said the last she thing she remembered before waking was yelling to her 14-year-old son to call the police, the report said. The woman’s other child is 3 years old and both were home at the time.

Rodriguez-Colon told police "he is involved in some high-level, classified government issues" that put his life in danger and that he had photos on his Facebook profile to prove why this is the case, the report said.

He told police he tried to contact the FBI, that his Facebook account had been deleted and that the woman started hitting him because he would not give up his Facebook password, and he began to hit her to stop her from hitting him, the report said.
