    Fire damages New London apartment

New London — A family was temporarily displaced Friday morning after a stove fire at Eagle Pointe Apartment Homes.

New London Fire Department Battalion Chief Tom Curcio said firefighters were called to 46 Michael Road at 8:36 a.m.

“It was a small kitchen fire just on top of the stove” which extended a bit into the cabinets above, he said. “We had to ventilate the building because there was quite a bit of smoke there.”

Damage was contained to the upper floor apartment, he said.

No one requested medical help when firefighters were on the scene, but a tenant later called an ambulance reporting dizziness and trouble breathing, Curcio said.

A couple and their children lived in the apartment. The fire marshal and apartment managers were talking Friday afternoon about what would need to be done next, Curcio said.

Amanda Goins, who lives on the upper floor in the same building, said, “I heard my neighbor screaming and then the fire alarm going off.”

Goins said the woman told her she was cooking bacon.

The couple have two children who were in school at the time, Goins said.
