Rob Simmons cuts his salary by $10,000 to raise selectmen's pay

Stonington — First Selectman Rob Simmons announced at Wednesday night’s Board of Selectmen meeting that he was reducing his annual $97,150 salary by $10,000 and using the money to increase the $6,316 salaries of Selectmen Mike Spellman and Kate Rotella by $5,000 each.

In separate votes so they would not have to vote to increase their own salary, Spellman and Rotella joined Simmons in approving the raises for the two selectmen’s positions.

Simmons said the $6,316 they had made was “ridiculously low” considering their expertise and the time and energy they put into the job.

Simmons said he relies on Spellman, a retired state police lieutenant who is a Groton City police officer, for advice on public safety matters while Rotella, who is the purchasing agent for the Town of Waterford, offers him guidance on procurement and financial issues.
