Montville police to hold open houses, speak at neighborhood meeting

Montville — Police will host several events over the next two weeks to inform the public about the upcoming referendum on an independent police department.

On Wednesday, Montville Police Lt. Leonard Bunnell will speak at the Chesterfield neighborhood watch meeting at 6 p.m. in the Chesterfield Fire Department at 1606 Hartford-New London Turnpike.

The meeting was scheduled before a public hearing on the referendum that will take place at the same time at Town Hall, Bunnell said.

The department will also host two open house-style events at the town’s public safety building on March 3 at 5 p.m. and March 5 at noon.

The referendum is scheduled for March 8 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Fair Oaks School at 836 Old Colchester Road in Oakdale.

Voters will be asked to decide whether to keep or overturn the Town Council’s January vote in favor of moving Montville’s officers out of the state police resident trooper program and creating an independent department.
