Replica of yacht America to visit Stonington and Mystic next month

Editor's note: This corrects an earlier version

Stonington -- A replica of the famed yacht America will visit New England Science and Sailing, the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club and Mystic Seaport next month.

The 139-foot yacht is a replica of the schooner that won a race around the Isle of Wight in 1851. That trophy was then renamed the America’s Cup. The replica is now on a tour of the East Coast before heading to the Caribbean and Bermuda next year to promote the 2017 America’s Cup competition in Bermuda.

The yacht is scheduled to arrive at New England Science and Sailing in the borough on June 7 and plans are underway to allow visitors to see the it while it is there, according to NESS founder and president Spike Lobdell. On June 8 it will visit the adjacent Stonington Harbor Yacht Club.

After a trip to Greenport, N.Y., the yacht is scheduled to arrive at the Seaport on Saturday, June 11, and museum visitors can board it during the mornings of June 12-14. There will also be day sails down the Mystic River to Fishers Island Sound for visitors on those afternoons.

The sails will begin at 1 p.m. and are expected to last 2½ hours. Tickets are $85 per adult and $45 for children under the age of 12. Museum admission is not required. Tickets for the day sails can be purchased by calling (860) 572-5339.

The Bermuda sloop Spirit of Bermuda, a 112-foot replica of a three-masted Royal Navy sloop-of-war from the 18th century, will also visit the museum at the same time and visitors can also go aboard on the mornings of June 12-14. America and Spirit of Bermuda will then depart for Newport, R.I., to participate in the 2016 Newport-Bermuda Race.

On June 13 and 14 and July 14 the Seaport will offer three presentations about the history and significance of the America’s Cup and Spirit of Bermuda. On June 13 at 7:30 p.m. will be  “The History and Evolution of the America’s Cup.” Capt. Troy Sears and Mystic Seaport photography curator Mary Anne Stets will discuss the history and future of the America’s Cup and present photographs and video from the Seaport’s collection of America’s Cup artifacts.

On June 14 at 7 p.m., “Up Close with Spirit of Bermuda” will be presented with Bermuda Sloop Foundation directors Malcolm Kirkland, Jay Kempe, and Alan Burland discussing the foundation and how and why the Spirit of Bermuda was built. The ship’s captain, Stuart Birnie, will speak about youth development using traditional vessels such as Spirit of Bermuda.

On July 11 at 7 p.m., the Seaport will present “The America’s Cup with Tucker Thompson” who is the official television and public host of the 35th America’s Cup. His multi-media presentation will cover the Cup’s history, the secrets behind Oracle Team USA’s comeback in 2013 and a behind-the-scenes view of the upcoming America’s Cup competition.

Tickets for each event are $15 for museum members and $20 for non-members. A series ticket for all three events is available for $40 for members and $55 for non-members. All three talks will be held in the River Room at Latitude 41° Restaurant & Tavern.
