    Mystic cleanup removes 547 pounds of trash

    Mystic — Friday’s trash cleanup resulted in more than a quarter-ton of debris being removed from a 10-mile stretch of waterfront.

    The effort involved 220 volunteers from Mystic Aquarium, Mystic Seaport, the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center and Stonington High School.

    The cleanup, which was part of Long Island Sound Day, resulted in the removal of 547 pounds of trash was collected, surpassing the group’s 400-pound goal by 147 pounds.

    Among the items collected from along Coogan Boulevard, River Road, Jerry Browne Road and Route 27 and the Navy recreational area on Route 1, were food wrappers, tires, cigarette butts, empty bottles and car parts.
