Groton Utilities begins third week of hydrant flushing

Groton — Groton Utilities' water division will begin its third week of flushing and cleaning hydrants and water mains on June 13, according to a news release.

Customers should expect some water discoloration during the process. The flushing disturbs naturally occurring minerals that have settled in the water mains, the utility said.

The water is safe to drink, but since it may be discolored, Groton Utilities advises customers to store tap water for drinking and cooking until the water clears up.

Residents also should check the condition of water before washing clothes.

Groton Utilities will clean water mains from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with no water main flushing during evening hours.

Hydrants will be flushed the week of June 13-17 according to this schedule: Route 117 toward Ledyard Center; Colonel Ledyard Highway; Gallup Hill; Ledyard Highlands; Shewville Road, the north end of Groton City, Route 12, from the Gales Ferry area to the Preston line; Long Cove Road and Avery Hill.
