East Lyme — Thousands of people packed a sweltering portion of Niantic’s Main Street Saturday, site of the 16th Annual Celebrate East Lyme festival.

More than 200 vendors lined either side of the street between Pennsylvania Avenue and Lake Avenue, where St. John’s Episcopal Church was sponsoring its annual carnival.

Coordinated by the town, citizens and the local business community, the festival was to be capped by a fireworks display Saturday night.
