    Family Day events planned at New London, Groton City farmers markets

    The New London and Groton City Field of Greens farmers markets will host Family Day events this week.

    The Groton event will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Washington Park. It will include a puppet show, TVCCA food tasting, and opportunities to meet with local farmers, artists and authors and to learn about healthy eating.

    Animals from the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center will be there, along with music by accordion player Tony Laisi, face painting and art by Expressiones, story time and children’s activities hosted by the Riverfront Children’s Center, Head Start Sacred Heart School. Food will be served by Rolling Tomato Pizza, Supreme Hot Dogs and Keifer's Kettle Korn.

    The New London market Family Day will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday at Williams Park. It will include a puppet show, food tastings, and opportunities to meet area farmers, bakers, soap makers and artists and to learn about healthy eating.

    It will also feature animals from the nature center, music performed by singer-songwriter Connie Howard, and face painting and art by Expressiones. Food will be served by Supreme Hot Dogs and Keifer's Kettle Korn.

    Children’s activities will be hosted by the Public Library of New London, the city’s Recreation Department and the Boys and Girls Club. The Kiwanis Club and Bike New London will also offer free bicycle repair and give out free bicycle helmets.

    Both markets accept WIC, senior vouchers, EBT/SNAP and debit cards for fresh fruits, vegetables, eggs, cheese and other foods offered there.

    The markets are sponsored by Thames Valley Sustainable Connections, the City of New London Recreation Department, City of Groton Recreation Department, Expressiones, Kiwanis Club, Bike New London and the Ledge Light Health District.
