Norwich – Planning and zoning permits were approved Tuesday night for a Dollar General at the site of the former Seafood Etc. location at 646 Boswell Ave.

Developer Sound Garrett Acquisition LLC needed permits for the project at back-to-back meetings Tuesday night. First, the project required zoning variances from the Zoning Board of Appeals for parking and building setback requirements. The building size for the proposed Dollar General store had to be reduced to avoid a federally designated floodway that runs through the property.

With the variances secured from the ZBA, the development team marched from that meeting at City Hall to the Commission on the City Plan meeting next door at the city planning office. The commission held a public hearing on special permit for the store and approved the project with conditions, City Planner Deanna Rhodes said.

The commission asked for aesthetic improvements, including windows and a front brick facade, Rhodes said, which the developers agreed to make.

Seafood Etc. closed May 8, after the longtime owners decided to consolidate to their Pawcatuck location. Sound Garrett plans to purchase the property for the proposed Dollar General store, which will be located within a half mile of two other discount stores along Route 12.
