Nature Center offers revamped program for homeschooled students

Mystic — Openings are available at the revamped Homeschool STEM program offered at The Denison Pequotsepos/Coogan Farm Nature and Heritage Center.

The nature center has been offering a monthly homeschool STEM class for more than a decade, but has recently expanded the program to better serve students and families and accommodate growth, the center said in a news release.

Last year a second class each month was added because of increased demand.

For the 2016-17 school year, the program has been reorganized to better meet the needs of the students. It continues to meet Connecticut and Rhode Island science education standards.

The program now offers three age groups, each of which will offer age and developmentally appropriate curricula.

    The groups are:

     • Little Explorers (ages 4 to 6), focusing on natural themes with creative play, songs, story time and crafts.

     • Scientists (ages 7 to 9), focuses on the scientific process with a new topic of inquiry each session.

     • Eco Engineers (ages 10 and older) will focus on students’ interests, the science behind why plants and animals behave the way they do and making tools out of natural materials, creating a dam in the stream and other experiments.

Also, the nature center has added a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) weekly class. Natural Art with Nature Nik meets Thursday mornings beginning Sept. 8 at Coogan Farm.

Students will fuse art and nature together to make new masterpieces and inventions to enhance our imaginations and point of view of nature, with a nature lesson included.

Registration can be found on the center’s website calendar.

The regular homeschool program meets the second and fourth Tuesday of every month from September to June. The full schedule can be found at dpnc.org/homeschool.

The cost is $15 per class, and center family membership is required.

The Natural Art with Nature Nik class is $10 per session, and does not require a family membership. It is open to the public, but geared to meet Connecticut and Rhode Island educational standards for homeschoolers.
