Two Mashantucket councilors seeking re-election
Mashantucket — Two long-serving members of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Council are seeking re-election in balloting scheduled to take place Nov. 6, during the tribe’s annual meeting.
A total of seven tribal members have been certified as candidates for the two seats up for election.
Marjorie Colebut-Jackson, the council secretary, is seeking a fifth consecutive three-year term, while Vice Chairwoman Fatima Dames is seeking a third consecutive term and fourth term overall.
The other candidates are Crystal Whipple, a former councilor who lost her bid for a third consecutive term last year; Melissa Burkhart, the tribal clerk; Roland Fahnbulleh Jr., Merrill Reels and Clifford Sebastian III.
The seven-member council governs the tribe and oversees the Mashantuckets’ gaming enterprise, including Foxwoods Resort Casino. The councilors not up for election include Rodney Butler, chairman; Jean Swift, treasurer; Roy Colebut-Ingram, Daniel Menihan Jr. and Richard E. Sebastian.
On Nov. 6, tribal members will first vote to fill the two council seats. A separate vote to elect a vice chairman then will take place. The secretary’s position will be filled by the new council following its inauguration early next year.
