Groton City Ethics Commission to meet Thursday

Groton — The Groton City Ethics Commission will hold a special meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Municipal Building to consider a new ethics complaint received recently.

The complaint remains confidential until the commission reviews it and decides whether to investigate. The complaint was filed after a controversy erupted regarding members of Groton Utilities and the utilities commission having attended one or more lavish trips to the Kentucky Derby the Connecticut Municipal Electric Energy Cooperative has hosted for the past four years.

The 2016 trip cost $342,330 for 44 attendees, including former Groton Mayor Dennis Popp, Groton Utilities Director Ron Gaudet, commission member Ed DeMuzzio and General Manager of Utilities Finance David Collard. Gaudet attended the trip for only one day, the Friday before the Kentucky Derby.
