New London union employees to host winter clothing drive

New London - The city employees union and the public works union are joining forces with Board of Education and adult education employees to sponsor a winter outerwear clothing drive from 9 a.m. to noon on Dec. 3 at the fire station at 289 Bank St.

All items collected will be donated to local agencies for distribution to children and adults in need in New London and surrounding communities. New or gently used clothing items are needed, such as coats, hats, gloves, scarves, boots, sweatshirts and more. The United Way of Southeastern Connecticut will also assist with distribution of items through the school system.

“The holiday season is particularly hard for the many among us who are having trouble making ends meet,” said AFSCME Local 1378 President David Kotecki. “We want to thank residents in advance for any contribution of winter outerwear that will make a difference in the lives of people trying to stay warm as winter approaches.”

Items may be left at drop-off sites prior to the Dec. 3 event. Sites include City Hall on State Street, the city finance office on Masonic Street, the New London Board of Education on Williams Street and the Martin Center on Broad Street. Volunteer help for the Dec. 3 event is also appreciated by showing up at the firehouse by 9 a.m.
