New London nonprofits awarded $1.1 million for housing work

New London — Eversource handed out checks totaling more than $1.1 million to three New London-based nonprofit groups on Monday, awarding organizations that have grown the affordable and supportive housing stock in the city.

Housing Opportunities for People, or HOPE Inc., the group credited with transforming the Belden Street neighborhood with a series of rehabilitation projects, received a check for $500,000. The group, which renovates and builds homes in New London, has created 30 units of housing on Belden Street alone.

Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut received $220,000 and The New London Homeless Hospitality Center received $397,340.

The housing tax credit contribution checks were part of Eversource’s commitment to communities it serves and aimed at groups whose mission is to help build strong communities through housing, according to Thomas Dorsey, Eversource’s manager for government affairs.

The money comes through the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority’s Housing Tax Credit Contribution program. Dorsey said Eversource, the leading purchaser of these credits in the state, will provide 28 checks to nonprofits across the state this year totaling $9.6 million.
