Blumenthal to call Monday for safety improvements at Stonington rail crossings

Stonington -- U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal is scheduled to meet with First Selectman Rob Simmons and residents at Town Hall on Monday to call on Amtrak to improve safety at two rail crossings in town. The meeting begins at 2:30 p.m.

With the Federal Rail Administration proposing a controversial rerouting of Amtrak lines through the town and region, Simmons has called on Amtrak to instead improve safety at the Walkers Dock and Freeman Island crossings, something he said should have occurred with the electrification of the rail line 20 years ago.

The two crossings have traditional gates, lights and bells but lack state-of-the-art quad gates and sensors to prevent accidents with cars. In addition, the trains have to sound their horns at each crossing, something town officials and residents have complained about for years.

In announcing Monday’s meeting, Blumenthal’s office stated “the horns do not provide adequate notice to passengers in a disabled vehicle on the rail crossing and the rail configuration does not provide a clear line of sight for the train engineer to safely react to such an incident.”

Blumenthal said Amtrak “should immediately address this critically important safety concern.”

Since a February 2015 Metro-North train collision with a car in Valhalla, N.Y., killed six people and injured 15, Blumenthal has been pressing Amtrak and the FRA to improve safety at crossings around the country. Such crashes kill 200 people a year.
