Stonington PZC to hold forum Tuesday on controversial short-term rentals

Stonington -- The Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public information forum Tuesday night to discuss a report on the increasing popularity of short-term home rentals, which are illegal here.

The forum is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Mystic Middle School and is expected to attract a large crowd of renters and neighbors who oppose the practice.

There will be an opportunity for residents to comment on a recent analysis by the Economic Development Commission of the potential benefits and problems surrounding such rentals. The town has begin issuing notices of violations to some renters.

In a Nov. 29, letter to First Selectman Rob Simmons, Andrew L. Kalloch, a policy manager with Airbnb, one of the leaders in the short-term rental business, said the company would “welcome the opportunity to work with you and interested stakeholders to create rules that enable middle-class Connecticuters to continue to use home sharing to make ends meet.”

He added, “Stonington should embrace this community by following the lead of other municipalities that have passed comprehensive regulations that recognize the benefits of home sharing. These regulations can include specific provisions related to registration of short-term rental hosts and public safety. We look forward to working with you to craft regulations that protect public safety and quality of life while ensuring that home sharing can continue to be an economic boon to your community.”

Comment threads are monitored for 48 hours after publication and then closed.
