Special-needs housing workshop offered in Old Saybrook
Old Saybrook — The Creative Housing Workgroup is hosting a workshop on special needs planning from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 12 at the Acton Library.
The presentation is designed to educate families on the importance of planning for the future of their child or dependent with special needs.
The workshop will address:
• special needs trusts
• protecting government benefit eligibility
• guardianship and conservatorship
• financial security and funding options
• the new Able Act
• letters of intent
The presenter, Stuart Hawkins, is a parent of an adult child with special needs, board chairman of PLAN — the Planned Lifetime Assistance Network of Connecticut — a nonprofit organization that acts as a trustee for special needs trusts, and a volunteer ski coach with the Special Olympics.
The meeting is open to anyone concerned about planning for the future of someone with a disability. Admission is free, but registration is required.
