Mystic Aquarium releases sea turtle after year-long rehabilitation

Mystic _ Mystic Aquarium announced Monday that a juvenile Kemp’s ridley sea turtle it had nursed back to health after it was rescued off Block Island on New Year’s Eve 2015, has been released in Georgia.

The aquarium’s Animal Rescue Team worked with local first responders to rescue the turtle after it had become cold-stunned and stranded.

The turtle, which aquarium staff named Resolution, was found to have pneumonia and a chronic bone infection of its maxillary beak. Over the next year, Resolution received both anti-fungal and antibiotic medications as well as weekly wound debridements and cleanings. Progress was monitored with radiographs.

Resolution, along with 10 other cold stunned turtles recovering at the New England Aquarium, were flown by a group of volunteer pilots to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Dec. 14, 2016.

After two more months of rehab there, Resolution was released on Feb. 2.

“I am so thankful to our first responders, the veterinary and animal care professionals here at Mystic, the volunteer pilots, and, of course, the Georgia Sea Turtle Center,” said Janelle Schuh, the aquarium’s stranding coordinator. “Every time we release an animal back into its natural habitat, it is a win for us. But when the animal is as crucial to the survival of the species, it is even more gratifying.”
